Soil Preparation

soil-prep1Remove vegetation. Kill off any existing vegetation. The product Roundup works well. After it dies back, rake any debris.

Add soil amendments. Determine what type of soil you have (clay, sand or loam). For heavy clay soil add Canadian Sphagnum peat moss and organic compost to lighten it up and add porosity. For sandy soil add Canadian Sphagnum peat moss and organic compost. When adding soil amendments also consider the moisture level in your soil (dry, consistent moisture or wet). It is recommended to add 3″ of each amendment to soil.

soil-prep2Good tillage. You want to create soil that is “loosened up”. After adding soil amendments, rototil soil 8-10″ deep to achieve this. If you have poor soil and don’t wish to amend, you might want to consider raised beds or berms for good drainage.
